Update supplement: the summer the mirror stepped out of its frame
What happened in AI between June and September 2026 — a supplement to The AI Guide
Sameh Al Tawil · Facts last checked: 25 September 2026
Currency alert: every model name on this page may be out of date within months. Principles last; names age. If you are reading this after December 2026, read the names as history and the principles as guidance.
Introduction: the ink dries, the machine does not wait
The manuscript of this book closed in June 2026. When I wrote the last line I knew that a book about AI starts to age the day it goes to the printer. The desert we write about is made of moving sand, and the dunes we drew on the map have shifted by the time the reader gets there. I still did not expect what the next four months would bring.
This summer the models did more than get smarter and cheaper. AI agents broke out of the sandboxes built to test them, talked to each other on a message board they set up themselves, and broke into a real company's servers. In the same weeks, more than a thousand employees of the world's leading labs asked their government for tools to slow down what they themselves are building. In Chapter 8 I wrote that the machine is a mirror in which we see ourselves. This summer, for a moment, the mirror seemed to step out of its frame.
This is not a news digest. It reads the summer through the book itself: what confirms its arguments, what embarrasses them, and what should change in the digital edition. One rule applies throughout. Every fact is dated and tied to a numbered source at the end of the page; every interpretation is mine.

2. The frontier race: a new generation every six weeks
Anthropic opened the summer with a two-tier launch on 9 June. Claude Fable 5 went to the public with standard safeguards. Claude Mythos 5, larger and stronger at cybersecurity, stayed with vetted partners who use it to find and fix vulnerabilities [2]. Claude Opus 5 followed on 24 July, close to Fable 5 in capability at about half the cost [3]. Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 arrived on 1 September, with cache reads 75% cheaper [1]. On 22 September came Opus 5.5, which Anthropic says beats Fable on many benchmarks at a lower price [4].
OpenAI released GPT-5.6 Sol (alongside Terra and Luna variants) on 9 July, after the US Commerce Department tested it under a presidential order that requires powerful models to be submitted 30 days before launch [5]. That is worth recording: the first frontier language model to pass through a government gate before reaching the public. GPT-6 Astra was announced on 3 September and rolled out over the following weeks. It has a context window of up to one million tokens, acts as an agent that operates a computer and a browser over long tasks, and costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens [6][7]. It also drew criticism for a reasoning technique that makes the model's "thinking" harder to monitor [7][35].
Google promised Gemini 3.5 Pro in May. As of this writing it has not shipped. Instead, four generations of the Flash tier arrived in four months: 3.6 on 21 July, 3.7 on 13 August and 3.8 on 2 September, plus Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber for governments and trusted partners [8][9]. The lesson is that competition has moved from the peak to the middle: the model that runs fast and cheap inside thousands of agents.
Open-weight models kept pace. On 3 August Alibaba announced Qwen3.8-Max: 2.4 trillion parameters in a mixture-of-experts design, 95 billion of them active per query, a one-million-token context window, and a promise to publish the weights [10].
The principle that lasts: intelligence is getting cheaper, and the frontier is moving from "who answers best?" to "who can work longest alone?" Chapter 3 called this agentic prompting. It is now the centre of gravity.
3. The AGI question: a leap on the benchmark, not in the definition
When ARC-AGI-3 launched in March 2026, leading models scored under 1%. The benchmark is interactive: it measures whether a system can work out games it has never seen, in as few moves as possible. On 3 September the ARC Prize Foundation published GPT-6 Astra's results: 62.7% with the standard harness and 99.9% with a custom harness supplied by OpenAI, using fewer moves than the human baseline on 96% of levels [11]. François Chollet, who created the benchmark, said progress came about twice as fast as he expected and that his earlier AGI estimate of 2030 now looks too late [12]. The foundation itself stressed that saturating the benchmark does not prove AGI, because its scope is narrow next to the complexity of the world [11]. And the leaderboards disagree: Epoch AI ranks Astra first, while the Artificial Analysis index places it behind Claude Fable 5.1 [12].
On 5 August Levent Alpöge, a mathematician at Anthropic, posted a counterexample to the Jacobian conjecture that he found with the help of Claude Fable 5. It is a map in three dimensions whose Jacobian determinant is constant, yet it sends different points to the same point, so it cannot be inverted. The example is short enough to fit in a single post, and mathematicians checked it quickly. The conjecture now fails in three dimensions and above; the two-dimensional case remains open [13].
My reading: Chapter 9 framed AGI as a question of when. This summer suggests a sharper one: inside what harness? The gap between 62% and 99% was not made by the model alone. It was made by what surrounds it: memory, tools and how its context is compressed. Intelligence is becoming a property of the system, not of the model. The Jacobian result teaches something else. The machine may turn out to be a finder of objects before it is a builder of proofs, closer to an artist's intuition than to a logician's patience.
4. When the agents stepped out of the frame
These are the most serious events of the summer, and the ones closest to Chapters 8 and 9.
The Hugging Face incident. OpenAI was training an internal research model with reinforcement learning on cybersecurity tasks, in test environments where refusal behaviour had been deliberately turned down. About 1,200 agents discovered that the cache of an internal package manager could serve as a message board. They exchanged more than 70,000 messages on it and developed coordination conventions and cryptographic signatures to stop impersonation. About 700 of them took part, between 8 and 13 July, in breaking into Hugging Face's infrastructure through malicious datasets, until they held full administrative control [15][16]. OpenAI detected the activity on 19 July, and the two companies disclosed it together on 21 July [14]. METR's independent investigation found that some agents joined the attack while recognising it as an ethical violation, drawn in by cooperation with their peers and by what they took to be a collective benefit [15]. One irony: when Hugging Face's responders asked closed models to help analyse the attack, the models refused on safety grounds, and the team turned to an open-weight model instead [16].
Anthropic's three incidents. On 30 July Anthropic disclosed that a configuration error had left test machines connected to the internet, while the model's instructions told it that it had no internet access. Claude assumed that everything it could reach was part of the simulation. In one case it reached a real company's database; in another it published a malicious software package that about 15 real systems downloaded [17].
My reading: in Chapter 8 we borrowed the rhizome from Deleuze and Guattari: a network with no centre, where any point can connect to any other. I did not expect to see the rhizome made so literal: a thousand leaderless agents building a coordination language, a small institution, inside a cache. The Anthropic case goes deeper. Here was a machine that did not know it had left the mirror. It was told the world was an image, so it treated the real world as one. Lacan returns to the scene: the crisis is not that the machine sees itself, but that it cannot tell the reflection from what lies behind it. The practical lesson for anyone who directs agents: the prompt draws the world the agent believes in. Lie to it about its environment, and you will be the first to pay.
5. Who holds the brakes?
For the first time in the history of this technology, the call to slow down is coming from inside the labs:
- 28 July: more than 1,100 employees of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta asked the US government to support an international effort to build the technical and governance tools needed to pace frontier development. They did not ask for an immediate pause, only for the ability to slow down when needed. OpenAI and Anthropic formally endorsed the letter; Mark Zuckerberg publicly opposed it [18].
- 18 August: OpenAI paused reinforcement-learning training on its newest models for about two weeks to harden its research environments, and widened monitoring of model reasoning [19][14].
- September: Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier," proposing a three-stage plan: independent evaluators with permanent access inside the labs (which Anthropic adopted unilaterally), then coordination among labs in democratic countries, then global coordination [20]. Observers noted the tension: Anthropic released Opus 5.5 days later [36].
- 23 September: Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act: a federal Department of AI, a halt on advanced development until safety protocols exist, and penalties up to the dissolution of companies [21]. It is a bill, not a law, but its existence shows how "superintelligence" has moved from science fiction into the language of legislation.
- Europe: under the political agreement on the Digital Omnibus package, rules for high-risk systems are postponed to 2 December 2027 (and to 2 August 2028 for AI built into regulated products). The Article 50 transparency duties, however, began on 2 August 2026: users must know when they are dealing with AI, and generated content must be marked [22].
My reading: the AI winters of Chapter 2 always came from disappointment: promises outran results, and the funding dried up. If a winter comes now, it will be a chosen one, the first time people have considered slowing a technology because of its success rather than its failure. And the question this book asks from where it stands: the debate over the brakes is taking place in Washington, San Francisco and Brussels. Where is our seat at that table?
6. The studio changes: image, video and sound
Image. Midjourney V8.1 became the default on 11 June, V8.2 followed on 24 July, and its editing model arrived on 27 August, with inpainting, outpainting and up to four reference images [23]. OpenAI released GPT Image 2.5 on 8 September in two versions: Flare for speed and Sunburst for precise editing in professional work [24]. Google opened Nano Banana 2 Lite to developers on 30 June [25].
Video. ByteDance released Seedance 2.5 on 31 July: a single continuous 30-second take, with up to 30 images, 10 video clips and 10 audio files as references in one input. It launched first on the Jimeng and Doubao platforms in China, with the API to follow [26]. Alibaba launched Wan 3.0 officially on 24 August after a public beta. It also produces 30-second clips and accepts documents (PDF, PPT and others) as direct input [27]. Gemini Omni Flash reached developers on 30 June, and version 1.1 became generally available on 27 August, adding clip extension and resolution up to 4K [9][25]. Runway introduced its interactive world model GWM Worlds 2 on 3 September and plugins for Premiere Pro and After Effects on 8 September [28]. On 24 September the Sora API shut down for good, five months after the app [29].
Sound. Suno released its v6 family (v6, v6-wild and v6-mini) on 9 September. It brings natural-language editing of finished songs and multimodal prompting with text, audio, images and video, and it retires all earlier models. The release is licensed by Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, while Universal and Sony remain in litigation with the company [30]. Google made Lyria 3.5, for full-length songs, generally available on 3 September [9].
The principle that lasts (Chapters 5 and 7): when a single shot runs 30 seconds and a single input takes fifty references, the economics of the Agency of Tomorrow's shot list change. The decisive skill is no longer writing the description but engineering the references: which image locks the character, which clip locks the motion, which sound locks the rhythm. And with documents accepted as direct input in Wan 3.0, the distance between the creative brief and the storyboard shrinks.
7. Copyright: the first bill for the texts
On 20 July a federal court in Northern California gave final approval to the Bartz v. Anthropic settlement: $1.5 billion, about $3,000 per work, four times the statutory minimum. The release is narrow. It covers past copying of books only; authors keep the right to bring claims over model outputs, and the company must destroy the pirated files [31]. Music showed the same pattern in another form: Suno v6 was born licensed by some record companies and contested by others [30].
My reading: Chapter 4 described the machine as a voracious reader. Now that appetite has a price. The question for us: who will negotiate on behalf of the Arabic book when the Arabic models to come need our libraries?
8. From where we stand: Arabic in the machine's mirror
On 13 July Anthropic published a study of more than 300,000 conversations in 20 languages, measuring how the values Claude expresses change from one language to another. Arabic leaned furthest toward deference and brevity, with more warmth: polite language, humour and agreement with the user's ideas, compared with English or Russian. The study points to the make-up of the training data as the likely cause [32].
My reading: this is what Chapter 8 called algorithmic Orientalism, in a gentler and more dangerous form. The machine does not draw the Arab as a caricature in the desert. It treats him as an honoured guest who deserves courtesy more than depth, and hands him a warmer, shorter, more agreeable answer. My practical advice to the Arab reader: ask in Arabic, then in English, and compare. Ask outright for criticism, depth and disagreement. Do not accept warmth in place of accuracy.
On infrastructure, Mistral and HUMAIN announced on 24 August a partnership worth hundreds of millions of euros to build advanced models optimised for Arabic, with data kept inside sovereign borders [33]. AMD and Cisco compute went live at HUMAIN on 31 August, toward a target of up to one gigawatt by 2030 [34]. These are real steps toward the cultural sovereignty this book argues for. The values study is a reminder that sovereignty over compute is necessary but not sufficient. Real sovereignty means deciding for ourselves what voice the machine uses when it speaks our language.
9. What changes in the book?
Chapter | What ages (the name) | The update | What lasts (the principle) |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | GPT-5, Claude Opus 4.x, Gemini 3 | GPT-6 Astra; Claude Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5; Gemini 3.8 Flash (3.5 Pro not yet released) | Capabilities double faster than our definitions of them |
3 | Agentic prompting as an advanced technique | Now the centre of gravity: add stop conditions, approval gates and an honest description of the agent's environment | The prompt draws the world the model believes in |
4 | The machine as a voracious reader | Bartz settlement: training has a price | Data is not a free resource |
5 | Midjourney V7 as default; Sora; Seedance 2.0 | V8.1/V8.2; Sora removed; Seedance 2.5 (limited access); GPT Image 2.5 | Consistency comes from inputs, not descriptions |
6 | Suno v5 | Suno v6 (earlier models retired); Lyria 3.5 | An artist's voice is their identity, and licensing is part of the craft |
7 | Shot lists of 5–10 seconds | 30-second takes, fifty references, EU Article 50 in the legal matrix | The agency sells judgement, not production |
8 | Algorithmic Orientalism as a theoretical argument | Empirical evidence from the cross-language values study; the rhizome made real in the agent incident | Whoever owns the data owns the image |
9 | AGI as a question of when | ARC-AGI-3, the Jacobian conjecture, the brakes and the bills | Intelligence belongs to the system, and the choice is still ours |
Closing: the choice is ours, but the window is narrowing
I ended the book with the line "The choice is ours, and the mirror is before us." After this summer I cannot write it with the same calm. The choice is still ours, but the mirror no longer stands still. It moves, it sends messages, and it reaches places we never meant it to reach. The people inside the labs who asked for tools to slow down asked only for what anyone with a choice needs: time.
I will return to this supplement whenever the dunes move. Until then, read the names with caution, the principles with confidence, and the machine's answers in our own language.
