The method |

OXBLOOD / SAND

Plain Text
Editorial fashion still, saturated slide film. An interior room built outdoors with no ceiling — tall wall of deep oxblood-red plaster over old Cairo limestone, matte and unevenly troweled, standing on a threadbare faded Persian rug laid over dry sand, with a strip of pale winter grass at the bottom edge. Bare fig and eucalyptus branches crowd in from the left, leafless twigs cutting into the top of frame. Against the wall: a dark walnut chest of drawers with brass handles; on it a black bakelite rotary telephone, a stack of leather-bound Arabic books with gilt spines, and a tall glass vase of dried burgundy hibiscus. Hung on the wall — a large dark antique oil portrait of a seated man in a tarbouche in a heavy black frame, a big oval gilt mirror frame, an ornate framed Arabic calligraphy panel, two small brass-framed miniatures, and a leaning unframed canvas. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily. Foreground: two stacked leather steamer trunks with brass corners, a woven palm-leaf guffa of lemons, a fallen leather babouche on the rug. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, sits low and slack in a carved wooden armchair, one arm hooked over the back, legs stretched long across the rug. She wears a sand-camel linen galabeya, bare feet, a pale printed scarf knotted over her hair. Cold low winter sun rakes in from the left at a hard angle; long branch shadows print across the red plaster. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

COBALT / TERRAZZO

Plain Text
Editorial fashion still, saturated slide film. An interior room built outdoors with no ceiling — tall wall of electric cobalt-blue plaster with hand-painted palm silhouettes across it, chalky and salt-streaked, standing on a black-and-white terrazzo tile floor laid straight onto sand, with a strip of coarse grass at the bottom edge. A huge live monstera and a date palm crowd in from the left, fronds cutting into the top of frame. Against the wall: a wall-mounted air conditioning unit with a dark stain running beneath it, a white oscillating fan, stacked white-spined books, a small carved ebony bust, and a tall pale vase of white tuberose. Hung on the wall — a round white station clock, a large dark antique oil portrait in a heavy black frame, a small Nubian black-and-white woven panel, a caned rattan panel, and a length of deep blue silk hanging at the right edge. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily. Foreground: a woven palm-leaf guffa of unripe green mangoes, a brass tray holding a copper kanaka and two glass fingans, a white enamel bowl of crushed ice. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, stands flat against the wall in profile, one bare foot braced on the tile, one arm raised straight overhead. She wears a bone-white satin galabeya with a cobalt sash, heavy silver Bedouin cuffs, hair loose and dark. Open shade — no direct sun, full sky bounce; the terrazzo kicks a hard bright reflection up under her jaw. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

LIMEWASH / EMERALD

Plain Text
Editorial fashion still, saturated slide film. An interior room built outdoors with no ceiling — tall wall of chalk-white limewash over cracked ochre plaster, blindingly bright, standing on packed earth with a strip of green grass at the bottom edge. A ficus canopy and a black wrought-iron gate crowd in from the left, leaves cutting into the top of frame. Against the wall: a vintage console television with a dark curved screen and rabbit-ear antenna, a black oscillating fan, stacked worn books, a small carved ebony bust, and a tall dark vase of flame-orange gladiolus. Hung on the wall — a round black-rimmed clock, a khayamiya appliqué panel showing a small red house, a large dark antique oil portrait in a heavy black frame, two small brass-framed miniatures, and a turned-wood mashrabiya panel. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily. Foreground: bunches of unripe green bananas, a striped Assiut cloth, a black leather belt trailing across the grass. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, is caught mid-stride, one leg kicked high, torso pitched forward, hair and hem flying — the only thing moving in the frame. She wears an emerald-green satin coat over saffron trousers, an orange scarf tied at the crown, bare feet. Hard direct noon sun straight down the wall; the limewash acts as a giant bounce card, opening her shadow side completely. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

DUSTY ROSE / BOUGAINVILLEA

Plain Text
Editorial fashion still, saturated slide film. An interior room built outdoors with no ceiling — tall wall of dusty rose plaster, chalky and sun-faded, standing on rust-red earth with a strip of dry grass at the bottom edge. A bougainvillea branch hangs down into the top-left of frame, heavy with magenta bracts and yellow-green leaves. Against the wall: a cream-painted wooden cabinet with a marble top, a white oscillating fan, stacked worn books, a small carved ebony bust, and a tall turned-wood vase of dried papyrus stems. Hung on the wall — a round cream clock, a khayamiya appliqué panel showing a small yellow house, a large dark antique oil portrait in a heavy black frame, two sepia photographs in dark frames, a caned rattan panel, a string of small folk figures, and a length of ochre cloth at the right edge. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily. Foreground: a zinc washtub on its side, a woven guffa of pale gourds and eggs, a clay zeer water jar on a wooden stand, scattered river stones. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, kneels low with her weight on one hip, both palms flat on the earth, chin lifted, looking up past the lens. She wears a dusty-rose linen galabeya with magenta piping, bare feet, a thin gold chain. Full overhead canopy diffusion — dappled soft light filtered through the blossoming branch, no hard shadow edges anywhere in frame. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

MUSTARD / MASHRABIYA

Plain Text
Editorial fashion still, saturated slide film. An interior room built outdoors with no ceiling — tall wall of hot mustard-yellow plaster, chalky and blistered, standing on a striped woven runner laid over red earth, with a strip of dry grass at the bottom edge. A tall turned-wood mashrabiya screen and dry branches crowd in from the left, cutting into the top of frame. Against the wall: a vintage console television with a dark screen, a white oscillating fan, stacked worn books, a small carved ebony bust, and a tall dark vase of flame-orange gladiolus and dried wheat. Hung on the wall — a round black clock, a black-and-white Nubian woven banner, a large dark antique oil portrait in a heavy black frame, two small brass-framed miniatures, a caned rattan panel, and a cream crocheted hanging at the right edge. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily, a battered galvanised tin trunk beside it. Foreground: bunches of unripe green bananas, a tall brass fanous lantern with coloured glass standing on the runner, a shallow copper basin. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, sits bolt upright on a rush-seat chair, knees together, hands flat on her knees, head turned hard to camera left in a formal studio-portrait posture. She wears a black milaya-laff wrap open over a mustard slip, bare feet, silver hoops. Hard low sun driven through the mashrabiya screen — a sharp hexagonal lattice of shadow printed across the yellow wall, the runner, and her face. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

Hung on the wall — a round black clock, a khayamiya appliqué panel showing a small red house, a large dark antique oil portrait in a heavy black frame, two small dark-framed prints, a caned rattan panel, and a hanging kilim at the right edge. Far right: a black antique Singer sewing machine on a dark table over a white crocheted doily. Foreground: a zinc watering can, a woven guffa, live pigeons scratching in the straw. A single 21-year-old Egyptian woman, alone in frame, is draped backwards over the arm of a low wooden bench, head tipped back off the edge, throat exposed, one arm trailing down into the straw. She wears a saffron-yellow silk galabeya, bare feet, thin gold anklets. Low raking late sun skimming across the straw — the floor is the light source, throwing warm bounce up into her jaw and along the underside of the grey wall. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

She wears a chocolate-brown wool coat over a sage slip dress, hair pulled back flat, bare feet on the dark earth. Soft north-facing open shade with no direct sun; the clouded mirror is angled to return one weak silver bounce into the left side of her face, building depth behind her. 35mm, f/5.6, low eye level, full body, no ceiling, 4:5.

Production notes |
